Do you have what it takes to become healthy and strong? It takes a lot of hard work and time throughout the day to prepare food ahead and to understand how to read the labels on food, but in the end you learn a lot about what is good for you. You become healthy, and when you feel healthy you also look healthy. Healthy kids look very good, and who doesn't want to look good? Exactly. Through label reading and helping your family shop, you too can become healthy!
Organic food Organic food has less bad things than regular food. "These bad things are called pesticides and herbicides"(1). These are put onto the food when the food is growing on the farm they are made at. Organic food on the other hand doesn't have any of these pesticides or herbicides. "Organic food is grown without other bad things such as Fertilizers, additives or growth regulations"(1). Organic food is better for you than regular because its usually more fresh. You can tell this from food labels.
Labeling A label is a piece of information located on a piece of the food packaging that lets you see whats in it. "One hundred percent Organic food has a label that says "100% organic". This means that whatever is being made can only be made out of organic products. There are also other labels that are simply just called "organic". These foods have at least 95 percent organic ingredients and products. The label that says "containing organic products" has at least 70 percent organic products"(2). These different labels allow you to tell apart what you're eating so you can see some of the good or bad things inside. Just because its not organic, doesn't mean its not healthy though, just read the labels to see if there's anything you recognize, such as tomatoes, vegetable oil and different spices. However, if its a word that is supper long that you cant pronounce for example, maltodextrin, then you probably shouldn't be eating it.
Snack time! Next time someone in your family goes shopping, maybe go with them? Show them all your new labeling tricks you've learned, and who knows you might even help your family to become more healthy too! Its easy to buy healthy snacks at the store. A lot of things are healthy, like different types of fruits and vegetables. All these healthy foods are located around the store like in the refrigerators or coolers. These places are usually home to good fruits and vegetables that can keep you awake in school and keep you energized. One reason for this is because fresh food usually has less preservatives. "preservatives are bad things put into food that helps make the food last longer"(2), and although this might sound like a good thing, preservatives can do many bad things to you. So just remember, fresh is best!
Go eat (:
Take all this new information and use it to become healthy and strong. You now know how to read labels, so go search for healthy fruits and vegetables or even other organic foods that are more fresh. Eating these foods that are preservative free will help keep you awake longer and keep you focused. Something your parents and teachers will appreciate!
