Global Warming and You

At least once in your lifetime, you most likely have stumbled across the term global warming. Just in case you have not, global warming is a term which means that the earth's overall temperature is rising. This is a worldwide issue, many scientists are concerned with some of the problems it causes. For example when the temperature of the earth rises it can lead to hurricanes, sicknesses, and even melting polar ice caps! Sounds Pretty serious right? Therefore with some tips from Recycling Rob, i have created this blog to show you what you can do to benefit our planet.

One Step at a Time

Recycling Rob's motto is " Reduce, reuse, and recycle." He believes that this is a good way to slow climate change. I am sure you are wondering,  "how does that relate to the weather?" Well, every item that you own has some sort of life cycle, and when you throw out any of those items such as paper, plastic, bottles etc. The elements in those objects will eventually be broken down over time and release toxic gasses into the environment. Those Toxic gasses are really called greenhouse gases. Here is how you can think about the three R's of saving the environment even more.

Reduce: Relates to the amount of garbage that your family produces. These are some ways to reduce the amount of waste that you have.

• Buy cloth napkins instead of wasting so many paper towels.
• try to stay away from disposable items like paper cups and paper plates.
• Buy items in bulk.
• Try not to buy items which have a lot of packaging.
• Limit amount of paper that you use.

Reuse: Recycling Rob says that is is important to reuse products. These are some things that he does, which you can do too!

• He uses reusable grocery bags so he does not have to waste so many from the store.
• He donates his old clothes and other objects to charity.
• He reuses many items for the same purpose
• He also uses resealable containers.

Recycle: It is very important for everyone to recycle. There are so many things that you are able to recycle. Some acceptable items are materials like: papers, plastic, boxes, cans, and even small appliances like toasters!

Why Should I Do This?

It may be hard to believe because it may not affect you personally, however global warming is not good for our planet. It can make people sick due to allergies and poor weather. Sometimes that depends on the area which people live in and how well they are able to adapt to the changes (2). Another reason why this is bad for our environment is because of the fact the polar ice caps seem to be melting. And that will leave no home for the poor polar bears. Scientists have seen big pattern changes in the weather. For example sometimes it could be really hot and there could be droughts, or it could be really wet and windy, which leads to hurricanes (2).

Goodbye Greenhouse gasses

One of the main problems that contribute to global warming is the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are natural fuels like gas or coal. And when these fuels are burned they release greenhouse gases. A major way that you personally can help is to limit the amount of electricity you use in your house. That is because when electricity is produced, fossil fuels are burned (1).  So remember to turn off electronics like video games or TV, and also be sure to ALWAYS turn off lights when you leave the room.
Global warming can have some pretty negative effects. However making a change starts with you. If we all do our part we can contribute the the environment, one step at a time.

I GOT AN HTC VIVE!

Top of the morning to ya laddies! My name is Jacksepticeye and today I'm gonna talk about virtual reality! I've received an HTC VIVE for early access and I just want to talk about how it works with you all, and who uses it as well. So lets get right into it! I'm going to put on my Vive to show all what it looks like and talk about how it works first. Alright, let get right into it!

Alright, I have my Vive's gear is all setup and as you can see, the headset is freaking huge (hahaha)! But it needs to be so it cuts off all of my peripheral vision. The headset has a little screen built inside of it that tricks your brain into thinking that it's some where else, the screen has to put out 75 frames per second! That a lot more frames than what most video games put out! The screen is also so freaking bright! God it hurts my eyes sometimes just looking into it for long periods of time.

Now you also ask, how does it track your movements Jack?

Well to answer your question, there is a gyroscopic sensor built into the headset so it tracks my movements in the game and changes the view according to where my head is, which is so bad arse! It's so cool that you don't need a controller to move your characters head, the controller is to just move your characters body, it just immerses you into the game and makes you feel like you're the character.

Now you also ask, how is the game generated in the headset? Like is it a computer?

The answer to that is no. As you an see, the wires attached to the back of the headset feed into the ports on my computer. The computer creates the 3D environment for me to interact with and projects it back into the headset. Don't think of it as if it's a movie projector, think of it as the HDMI cable connecting from your Xbox or PlayStation to you TV.

Oh! I almost forgot to mention that the VIVE also comes with these two motion controller sticks. These are pretty much like WII remotes. They have little sensors that track your hands movements, and little buttons on them to allow your to pick up items/navigate through the menus in your game. It definietly much better than using an average controller because of the immersive feeling that you get playing your games. I LOVE THIS THING!

Alright so I'm gonna put my Vive away and talk about who uses this kind of technology with you guys, so I'll you guys in just a second.

Alright so now I've  put all of my Vive's gear away so I can talk to you all about who uses this kind of technology. So lets right into it AGAIN!

Alright so the main people who this kind of technology is of courses GAMER'S like us! Gamer's like PewDiePie, Merkiplier, and myself included use these headset to entertain guys all the time. But it's not just famous gamer's who use it, even the average gamer use these headsets to entertain themselves all the time. But gamer's don't use this kind of technology, doctors and scientists use it as well! Like I said EVERYONE USES IT!

Some doctors have used it to help those who have suffered from a stroke. There was a study done in Korea by a group of scientists, and they learned that with the addition of Virtual Reality with a patients physical therapy, it had an effect on the patients walking tasks. Their walking improved significantly(1)! That's freaking amazing! There was also another study that showed that it also can help those have suffered from PTSD. A psychologists would have the patient put on a Virtual Reality headset and they would have them engage in a 3D environment that took place in Iraq or Afghanistan. The psychologist would talk them through the environment, making sure that the patient was calm, and wouldn't let the patient loose control. The study proved that it can have a major effect on PSTD patients (2)! Isn't that amazing!? And people say video games can help anyone, I laugh at that accusation!

Cookies Are Following You!

     I’m sure most, if not all of you, have had a cookie. There’s many different kinds, such as chocolate chip, oatmeal, sugar, and snicker doodles. But there’s 1 kind of cookie you can’t eat, and they’re computer cookies. It’s not a baked good, it’s a small piece of technology within your computer that remembers everything you do on your computer. The cookie is like the brain of your computer, it remembers everything you look up, buy, and post. These cookies can sometimes be helpful when you forget your password to websites, but they’re always watching you too(3). They collect all of your information based off of what you put online.

  You should always search, and use your computer in a safe way. Facebook is a very popular social media platform which has over 1.35 billion users, that's more people than live in China(1)! What may sound like a fun way to meet friends around the world, or to connect to old family, and friends has turned into a really scary thing. Those cookies I mentioned before (not the edible ones), remember everything about you, and can get information from your Facebook page. By having the cookies follow you, they’ll know the basics about you. Such as your gender, perhaps your age, and the things you’re interested in (2). There's people who run ads online, and they are like the people at the malls who try to sell you stuff at the little stands outside of stores. If they’re selling hair straighteners, they’re not going to go to an old bald man and try to sell it to him. But if a young woman walks by with long, curly, hair, they’ll try to sell it to her instead. This is because they need to sell based off of things you’ll most likely be interested in. Many, almost all websites, will pay to have cookies track you so they can advertise to you based on what you like (2).  Facebook pays to have these cookies follow you while you search the web, to make advertisements for you based on what you’ve searched (3). Kind of creepy, right? How many times have you went onto a clothing website and had to make an account to shop, so you click “Login with Facebook”? I do this all the time without even thinking. When you log into Facebook the following time, you may notice something weird. That clothing store is being advertised all over your page. Coincidental? Not at all. Those cookies followed you from the Facebook login, and now they know you like the certain clothes you bought from that website, and now you’ll always be bombarded with these ads for those clothes (2). These cookies will be bought from websites, and used to advertise (2). These advertisement companies have spent a lot of time, and money trying to make sure they'll be successful in getting your money and advertising to you personally. Facebook is not the only website that does this. You should always be careful when you’re online.

     There are a few ways in which you can avoid falling for these ads, and you can do so by deleting the cookies off your computer. Although this is not going to guarantee that companies won’t still follow you, it can help. When going online, you should be sure to not put any personal information online, because it will be remembered forever. You should always be careful, and get your parents’ permission before searching for things online. They’ll know what kind of things can be dangerous and they’ll make sure you’re staying safe online!

Rovers on Mars

The Rover on Mars.

Have you ever wondered how scientists know so much about the planet Mars? They have what are called rovers. Rovers are robots that move on a surface of an object in space. To build and make sure a rover functions like a robot, a lot of technology is used. The three rovers up in space are Opportunity, Spirit, who are twins, and then the most recent one Curiosity. The rover Curiosity is sending us information that is very useful to us. This is the rover that I will be informing you on today.

What does the Curiosity Rover look like?

The Curiosity Rover is much bigger than the Opportunity and Spirit rovers. It is sort of similar to parts a human has such as eyes, body, arms, legs, and a brain.  The brain of the rover is the most important part, because just like a human, the brain is the main part it needs in order to function correctly. To compare it to an object here on earth, it is as big as a small SUV.

What is the job of the Curiosity Rover and what does it do?

The main job of the Curiosity Rover is to see if there have been any forms of life in the past on Mars and if it able to sustain life on its planet. Since the rover isn't one that travels fast, it only travels a distance of about 100 meters a day. It takes pictures and sends them back to the scientists at NASA. With those pictures, scientists are able to research Mars even further. It allows NASA to get more information to answer their question "Is there really life on Mars?" With one of it's arms, the rover is able to pick up samples of rocks and is able to dissolve them inside of itself. It will then send back information on how the soil has formed.

What has been some of the things Curiosity has discovered?

Curiosity was able to send back information to NASA that there may be some habitable forms of life, this happened back in the year 2013. There is something that scientists need to make sure that there can be some habitable forms of life, which are organics. Organics are sort of building blocks for life, but they can also be caused by chemical reactions.  Curiosity also has a tool that allows it to measure the temperature and climate on Mars. This tool is called the Radiation Assessment Detector.

What is the Radiation Assessment Detector?

The Radiation Assessment Detector allows the scientists to retrieve information from the rover of the climate on planet Mars. Usually every 15 minutes the climate is radiated from the ground and atmosphere. This helps us see if NASA is able to send a group of Astronauts to Mars. In 2013, NASA was able to look into the amount of radiation that Curiosity had detected. The research they performed gave them information, which allows them to send astronauts to Mars.

As you can see Curiosity is able to do many things with the technology it has installed. It is able to gas up evidence inside of its body, send back information to NASA here on Earth, and measure the climate on Mars. This rover is something that can change human race drastically. If life can be sustained on Mars, then a crew of people are going to be trained to spend the rest of their lives there.

CEOs

What if you had so much money that you could buy as much chocolate and ice cream as you wanted? There are a group of people who have the power to do that! These people are known as Chief Executive Officers. Wouldn't it be really cool if you were a Chief Executive Officer, so you could buy all the things you wanted.

What Exactly Does a CEO Do? 

What it means to be a Chief Executive Officer is that you have the highest power in a company and have the final say in all situations (1). Not only do you make a ton of money, but you can boss people around too! If you are a CEO, you are a very important person, because you have control of a company that many people depend on. You might have a lot of money and a lot of control, but you must remember that you are responsible for a lot of things, so you have to stay on top of your work.

What Can You Do To Become One?

If you want to grow up to be a powerful person, like a CEO, you have to study very hard. It takes a lot of work, but most CEOs graduated from well respected colleges (2). With this in mind, if you want to grow up to be successful, you have to take school seriously and work very hard. 

How Much Time Is Spent Working?

Since CEOs are extremely wealthy, many people think they do nothing and are greedy people. Actually, CEOs are known to be working so often to help their company that they do not see their families as much as they would like to. This goes to show how much CEOs care about their company and want to make it better.

What to Remember 

You must remember if you want to grow up to be a well-respected, wealthy person, you have to have work hard to get there and dedicate most of your time to your job. It may not be easy, but if you put your mind to it you can do anything!

Deforestation

How do we Get it All?

Have you ever stopped to think where we get the paper we use to draw on, make books, or fold paper airplanes out of? You may already know that it all comes the wood of a tree, but how do we get so much of it? We get all of that paper and lots of other things by cutting down trees. Cutting down some trees can be okay, but taking too many causes something called deforestation.

What Exactly is Deforestation?

Deforestation is when all or a big part of a forest is cut down. The bad news is that when we do this, the environment is hurt. The environment is any place that a plant, person or animal lives. Deforestation hurts the environment by causing the weather to change. This is called climate change. When a lot of trees are cut down, all the water that is trapped in the air under the trees goes away, which could make a forest or jungle either cooler or warmer. The new changes could make the forest too hot, too cool, too rainy, or not rainy enough, which makes plants and animals like the koala in figure 2 not want to live there anymore (1). This is a problem, because sometimes when one thing goes wrong in the environment, the whole thing comes tumbling down, like how taking one of the blocks from the bottom of a Jenga tower makes it fall apart.

If it Hurts the Planet, Why do we do it?

If you look around the room right now, chances are that you will see a lot of things that are made of wood. Desks, chairs, paper, and floorboards. Everywhere you look you can probably see something that's made of wood. All of that wood has to come from somewhere. We also cut down trees to make room for farms, houses, towns, cities, and parks. Obviously, we have to cut down a lot of trees to make all of these things possible. Even though we are starting to use things such as bamboo and recycled wood more often, we will probably always need normal wood for some things (2). It is also well known that cutting down forests hurts the planet when the machines used release gases into the air. Since so many people know why deforestation is dangerous, many people want to do something about it. These people can be considered environmentalists, which means that they put a lot of thought into how the world is treated.

What can an Environmentalist do?

Evironmentalists do many things to make sure that the forests and jungles stay around. This means that you can be one too. They join and create groups that want the government to stop people from cutting down too much of a jungle or forest (3). Doing that is mostly for adults, but environmentalists also do smaller things that you can do as well. They try to use less paper, which you can do by using both sides of a piece of paper when you do school work or draw, or you can dry your hands with a cloth towel instead of a paper towel. They also plant trees in some places that need them. This is usually done by planting baby trees the the one in figure 3, but you can plant seed that you find so you can help a forest grow. By doing these things and taking an interest in saving the planet, you become an environmentalist too. There are loads of ways you can help. Can you think of any other ways that you can keep forest from being cut down?

Darpa takes flight with A.R.E.S

In greek mythology, Ares ruled over the battlefield, riding in a chariot with his two sons deimos and phobos or fear and panic respectively. It would only be appropriate that lockheed martin in association with piasecki aircraft would name their war machine codenamed "A.R.E.S". The acronym stands for Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System (1), which means in layman's terms a drone that will be augmentable to fulfill certain tasks on the battlefield. Before we begin our journey into the ARES program we must set the stage for america and the world at the time of its conception.

A Brave New World

Whats the purpose The year is 2009 and the USA is deeply entrenched in the war on terror. Operations in taliban hotspots are seeing a rise in attacks on convoys heading to bases to provide them with supplies. DARPA takes notice of this increasing deadly trend and creates the transformers initiative. The task was relatively simple, create a semi autonomous robot that could fly, take off and land vertically and also be reconfigurable for certain objectives. After many trials and increased funding going to the private sector DARPA announces a winner, Lockheed Martin's ARES program. Although not what was originally conceived by darpa the ARES program fit all the requirements and in theory could accomplish the battlefield tasks. See figure 1 for an artists depiction of ARES flying in the air, presumably on its way to help soldiers on the field. 

The ARES program and the greater Transformers program seeks to relieve soldiers of certain duties that needlessly put them at risk. Effectively the Transformers program seeks to put a robot into a situation that most likely would otherwise result in possible casualties. Lockheed Martins ARES program seeks to eliminate 4 responsibilities: transportation, reconnaissance, close air support, and casualty evacuation using a system of pod modules. The drone would have a central airframe consisting of two ducted fans. In Layman's terms a ducted fan is a rotor which has been placed in a duct which is basically a housing. The housing serves to increase performance, therefore lift and total possible cargo weight are both increased. The housing would attach to the pod modules by a harness which could raise and lower them into position during hovering operations. (1)

Transportation

The most important of the four goals is to provide safer transportation of goods and troops throughout hostile areas. The second highest cause of death for soldiers is during transportation. The system seeks to alleviate the risk by offering a flight option with VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) capabilities. The system could transport both equipment and personnel to their desired destination, without the need for on flight pilots. 

Reconnaissance

Another high risk area on the battlefront would be intelligence gathering. It is also quite strenuous for the soldiers involved, as it often times includes long hours of waiting, with little to no time for rest. The reconnaissance package would be designed to gather info using cameras and imaging sensors which would allow for a more indepth look at enemy movements. 

Close Air Support

The unfortunate truth is that war requires fighting, and ARES comes prepared. The close air support package would allow for remotely piloted guns to engage targets in tandem with ground operations. DARPA has made it clear that ARES would only be used in tandem with ground operations and is not intended to operate on its own. This task is very dangerous and could help alleviate some of the dangers felt by aircrews and infantrymen alike. The infantry still gets air support while the aircrews don't have to be put in danger to provide it. Also ARES is more versatile, due to its smaller more nimble airframe when compared to a  MH-6 little bird, which is often used to fill the close air support role.

Casualty Evacuation

Another important facet of the ARES program is the unmanned casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) pod. The CASEVAC pod would be equipped with basic life support systems and possibly a field medic. Casualty Evacuation is often times very difficult during a mission, as the soldiers have already been fired upon and the helicopter is a large slow target. Sometimes CASEVAC by helo is impossible due to the risks placed on the aircrew by the opposing forces, (3) but this is where ARES shines. The eliminated aircrew means that ARES could go to possibly hostile environments and if it gets shut down it is not a big deal, nobody dies. 

A one time fix for a multitude of problems

The ARES system is a functional solution to all types of problems with manned air systems. The implementation should be seamless, as the modular design allows for quick changes to its mission. Among other things the ARES system also will help eliminate soldiers risks on the frontlines and make soldiers lives easier through additional support systems and wider availability of air support. Lastly the ARES system can operate without proper infrastructure needed by other forms of transportation such as helicopters and planes. No longer will robotics be a band-aid on a problem but rather they will be a permanent solution.
